Museums started holding large loan exhibitions of historic art in the late 19th century, as also did the Royal Academy, but the modern "blockbuster" museum exhibition, with long queues and a large illustrated catalogue, is generally agreed to have been introduced by the exhibitions of artifacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun held in several cities in the 1970s.Many exhibitions, especially in the days before good photographs were available, are important in stimulating research in art history; the exhibition held in Bruges in 1902 (poster illustrated below) had a crucial impact on the study of Early Netherlandish painting. All evidence indicates that the salons were heavily attended throughout the eighteenth century, providing a cultural event of high entertainment value. They were decisive in promoting the rise of a new art-world phenomenon—the free-lance journalist-critic. Gabriel-Jacques de Saint-Aubin's etching View of the Salon (1753) shows how the paintings being exhibited were closely hung in stacked registers, but it also conveys the public's animation and excitement when attending the salons.The success of the exhibition led to the competition of 1727, again initiated by the Duc d'Antin. This event was held among academy history painters (the highest class of artists at the academy), and the paintings were placed on easels (an innovation in exhibition history) in another room at the Louvre, the Gallery of Apollo.Art exhibitions in Rome were always closely tied to religious celebrations. During the first half of the seventeenth century, paintings began to be specially displayed within some churches on saints' feast days. During the Holy Years of 1650, 1675, and 1700, the lay society of the Congregazione Pontificia dei Virtuosi, composed mainly of artists, mounted juried exhibitions of paintings in the portico of their church, the Pantheon.Florence and Rome: academic exhibitions. Art academies were founded in Florence and Rome in the later sixteenth century. Whether addressing the construction of history, personal mythologies, or the politics of representation, these exhibitions challenge and inspire us to rethink and re-imagine our relationship to time, place, and culture."They are borrowed from private lenders and institutions such as the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center and the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, as well municipalities including the cities of Baltimore, Boston, Montgomery, New Orleans, and Pittsburgh. MONUMENTS will be accompanied by a scholarly publication and a robust slate of public and educational programming. MONUMENTS is co-organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and The Brick, Los Angeles, based on an exhibition concept by The Brick Director Hamza Walker.Friendship, love, and intimacy become important starting points for artistic expression.
